The Texas Gulf Coast region extends some 350 miles from South Padre Island and the Rio Grande Valley to the Louisiana border. Corpus Christi, some 150 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, is home to the country’s fifth largest deep-water port and a diverse business climate. Substantial growth in health services and tourism pulls in one billion dollars every year. In addition to rich cultural attractions, Corpus is home to the U.S. Open Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Regatta and gateway to the primitive beaches of Padre Island National Seashore.
Further up the coast in southern Calhoun County lies Port O’Connor, the “Best kept secret on the Texas Gulf Coast.” Economic drivers of this unincorporated city include tourism, commercial fisheries and petrochemical industry. Port O’Connor is also known for its outstanding shelling, birding and sports fishing, and just a boat ride away from Matagorda Island State Park.
